Courses & Syllabuses

ABOUT THE SYLLABUS

Shown below is a several-page, complete and detailed course syllabus for TheQEffectz Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Class. These courses will be spread out for a period of three and four months respectively. The syllabus is a section-by-section explanation, including comments based on use of this format over a period. Because this syllabus should be distributed and reviewed with tutors and students alike, tutors would have been presented with this syllabus before the commencement of training, while students will receive a copy immediately after registration and approval via mail.

The syllabus here reflects TheQEffectz’s philosophy and teaching expertise, which a syllabus should reflect. Other tutors may have very different ideas about the course structures and policies, however these ideas will be geared towards the attainment of the various courses. The syllabus is posted here principally to represent an Internet Syllabus format. Because online tutors do not meet students in a classroom and discuss syllabi face-to-face with students, this syllabus would therefore need to be longer than regular classroom equivalents. And so, TheQEffectz therefore urges its tutors to devote the entire first online class to the syllabus so as, to get the students acquainted.

ABOUT THE COURSES

TheQEffectz Online classes contain several courses which by design specifically accommodates different learning styles by involving a variety of components, including text, a wealth of photos, illustrations and drawings, video clips, self-check quizzes, assignments, reference lists, online discussion and projects. Since you are probably used to learning as prescribed or required by a classroom teacher, and not used to designing your own learning strategy, it might take a little time for to adjust and to settle into a comfortable routine. I think you’ll find that as you figure out on your own (and with the help of the assignments, tests and quizzes) how to learn the materials, everything will fall into place.

Online learning, you will find, is quite different from classroom learning. It requires different attitudes, responsibilities and communications skills. To help you prepare for this different learning environment (for most students), you might want to check out your "Student Guide" immediately after registration and approval to learn how to navigate our platform, how to update your profile and what your responsibilities are as a student.

E-BOOKS AND REQUIRED SUPPLIES:

  1. Visit The Sewing Resources’ page to view all books, e-patterns and videos, relevant to this class. They are made available for free or for sale. Please download and study.
  2. Supplies (all sewing, fashioning designing and pattern-making tools listed in the various courses) are needed during class. Click here to purchase them from our shop.
  3. Good internet connection: As a student, you’ll need a good internet connection to participate in our classes, download or view our lessons.

CONTACTING THE TUTOR: Because this course is so versatile, we have a number of tutors assigned to each courses. Click here to see who they are and how to contact them. However one-on-one tutoring is opened only to students in the Advanced class.

CONTACTING CLASSMATES: Via our platform, you can interact with other class mates. At the front-page menu, you’ll find page option titled “Meet Others”. Place your mouse pointer on it, and a drop-down menu with the options: "Meet your tutors" and "Meet Classmates" will appear. Click on "Meet Classmates". This page contains the names and contact details of everyone in the class. If you want your picture, and biographical information to be available to other students, simply include them on your profile page

COURSE ACTIVITIES:

  • READING

Most of the required reading will be reading of materials posted in each class. Reading additional e-books is recommended for every topic studied. The material presented by the tutor will seldom duplicate what is presented on these available e-books, so these books will be used as add-ons to complement the online class materials. The suggested books will be listed after each class. It is therefore best that you read and practicalize the contents of the suggested books before or after the dates of study proffered by the tutor.

To be able to read any of these e-books (after download) from your mobile devices, laptops or pcs, you will need an PDF, EPUB or DOC. Reader. Download them if you do not already have these applications installed on the above-mentioned devices.

Videos clips and Online video tutorials are incorporated into the Advanced online courses. To view these clips or video tutorials, you will need a flash player and video player. Download them if you do not already have these applications installed on the above-mentioned devices.

  • ASSIGNMENTS & TESTS

Ungraded assignments for testing yourself on class explanations and other activities will be available at the end of every class. Answers and explanations will be proffered the next day in class by the tutor. Tests will however be prepared at the tutor’s discretion, date and time. Such tests will be made available as in-class quizzes or as assignments. These quizzes/assignments will thus give you a good idea about how well you are learning the courses. These tests will be in the form of self-check quizzes of multiple choice answers. In the place of more practical quizzes, students will be expected to prepare projects, make a short video of how they were done and mail them to their tutors.

  • FINAL EXAMS: These questions will be prepared towards the end of the session by the various tutors. Also, in the form of practical’s, the students will be expected to submit their works (which could be in the form of photos or videos) to be graded by tutors.
